How Work Affects Family Life Essay

Today, the term â€Å"family† is hard to characterize. All families are extraordinary, and they can go anyplace from single parent families to more distant families. In particular however, it is in the family where the cutting edge is being assembled. Guardians must give security and backing to their youngsters, and they should be set up for the difficulties of adjusting work and family in today’s society. In customary families, there was a mother, a dad and their subsequent kids. The dad would frequently be the worker of the family, and the mother would remain at home and deal with the kids. Things have changed extensively in the twenty-first century. Presently there are progressively double salary families, single-parent families, and there are a lot more ladies in the work power. This represents an extraordinary change to family life, and numerous guardians are working a â€Å"double day†. They have their ordinary all day employments where they gain a pay, and afterward they need to return home to more work, for example, cooking, cleaning and shopping for food. Like all frameworks and cooperations, struggle emerges among work and family issues. This issue causes struggle for each individual from the family, and they have to find approaches to determine this contention. As indicated by the women's activist hypothesis, â€Å"gender is essential to every single social structure and organizations†. (Eshleman and Wilson, 2001:23). Clearly, it is likewise essential to the contentions of work and family life. Today, the two people must go to work to help their families, yet it is generally the lady who needs to return home and do the cooking, cleaning and shopping for food, while her significant other plays with the children or sits in front of the TV in the lounge room. This is certainly a worry that should be tended to, and in spite of the fact that there have been a few upgrades around there, significantly more should even now be possible. More enhancements have likewise been made by bosses, associations and the administration to profit families who have all day occupations. Despite the fact that, they have made strides towards improving this quandary, there are as yet numerous issues that should be managed. The social clash hypothesis expresses that â€Å"conflict is common and unavoidable in all human interaction† (Eshleman and Wilson, 2001:15). It isn't viewed as a pessimistic hypothesis, it just calls for individuals to know that contention will emerge, and that they have to think of answers for these battles. This is the same in the family. Today’s families need to manage strain on the large scale level and the smaller scale level. Work and business influence both theâ macro and smaller scale components of the family. An ever increasing number of assortments of families are happening, for example, double salary families, single-parent families, and families who deal with their youngsters just as their folks. These individuals face tribulations ordinarily of their lives while attempting to shuffle work and their family. For the most part in double pay families, and single-parent families, individuals are playing out a â€Å"double day†. As per Eshleman and Wilso n (2001), the twofold day, or second move, alludes to the blend of paid and unpaid work the vast majority do. The relative gaining the pay â€Å"often feels pressure and experiences challenges attempting to meet their duties as relatives and as employees† (Coates, 1991:1). This influences their exhibition at work and at home. They are trapped in the center between attempting to help the family, and needing to make a decent domain for their family to develop in. Society tells these guardians that â€Å"they are terrible [parents] in the event that they don’t go to the school play and awful representatives in the event that they do proceed to get a vacation from work† (Denholtz, 2000:91). The youngsters or older individuals in the leader of the household’s care additionally experience the ill effects of the work/family struggle. Kids are frequently raised by others other than their own folks, for example, babysitters, educators, different family members or day care laborers. Numerous kids must figure out how to grow up significantly speedier than they would ordinarily need to if their folks were consistently around which could be acceptable now and again, however not all that great in others. Each individual from the family should have a job, and realize that job. Accomplices must examine who will do the dishes that night, and who will take the youngsters to baseball training. Youngsters should likewise assist with family unit errands, and assume some liability for themselves. In the event that all individuals from the family can go to a particular understanding, and execute a decent arrangement to fulfill everybody, work and family can be overseen. All that is required are the correct perspectives and assets. A few couples in Crysdale’s investigation of regular workers individuals in downtown Toronto said that they oversee inconvenience at work by jettisoning it they return home (1991:103). There was not constantly an issue between family life and work. Normally, the main ladies who might work were youthful, single females with no different commitments. Hitched ladies would remain at home with their kids, do all theâ housework and ensure dinner was on the table for their spouses when they returned home from work. The pickle among work and family emerged when ladies started taking an interest more in the work power during and after World War I. Their contribution in the work power has consistently expanded since the start of the twentieth century, while men’s cooperation has diminished. As per Eshleman and Wilson (2001), 16.2 percent of ladies beyond fifteen 1911 years old utilized in 1911, and roughly 60 percent of ladies are utilized today. So in less than a century the quantity of ladies working has nearly quadrupled. There are a wide range of reasons clarifying why an ever increasing number of ladies are joining the work power. It fundamentally first began du ring World War II, in light of the fact that there was an incredible requirement for laborers in industrial facilities, stores, and so forth., and the men were off battling in the war. Along these lines, the ladies needed to join the work power, and after the war, when they could find employment elsewhere, numerous ladies decided to remain as opposed to turning into a housewife indeed. In the 1960’s, there was a women’s freedom development, and this timespan was the most huge change in women’s jobs. Spouses and moms needed to be liberated from the limitations put on them in the home, such huge numbers of them chose to go to work. Preceding this, primarily single ladies were working for pay, yet from that point forward the hole among single and wedded ladies has diminished. Additionally, there has been an expansion in the quantity of mixed families, customary law connections, and single-parent families which powers most individuals from these families to discover paid work so as to monetarily bolster their family. Most single guardians must go to work to accommodate the family since they have no assistance from the mother or father of their youn gsters. By and large, various conditions have prompted the expanded issues among work and family life. As should be obvious, as ladies increased an increasingly huge job in the work power, and as various kinds of families emerged, for example, single-parent families, the contentions likewise expanded. When Eshleman and Wilson are clarifying the women's activist hypothesis they pose the inquiry, â€Å"What about women?† Their responses to this inquiry are: In light of the thoughts that the encounters of ladies are unique in relation to those of men, are inconsistent (less advantaged) to those of men, and are activelyâ oppressed (limited, subjected, utilized and manhandled) by men. (p. 23) This definition works consummately into the quandary among men and women’s jobs in the family and in the work power. We should consistently consider ladies and sexual orientation when making presumptions about the family and work since they are indivisible issues. Indeed, even with the serious changes that have occurred in the family structure and the workforce, there is as yet the general thought that a woman’s as a matter of first importance duty is in the home, in any event, when she is occupied with work outside of the home. Ladies laborers experience significantly more pressure and trouble in adjusting work and home than men do, in light of the fact that they â€Å"tend to manage an unbalanced portion of family unit errands and family responsibilities† (Coates, 1991:8). Coates (1991) recorded some significant insights from a review by the Conference of Canada in his article. He inferred that ladies announced spending a normal of 16.5 hours out of each week on ‘home maintenance’ contrasted with 9.8 hours by men. 75% of the ladies detailed that they had most of duty regarding making kid game plans contrasted with 4.1 percent of men, and ladies were right around multiple times as liable to remain at home with their kids when they were wiped out. Essentially, the work and family issue has been seen distinctly as a lady issue, which makes issues between spouse wife families. This is a small scale case of the social clash hypothesis. Work makes struggle inside the family between the spouse and the wife, in concluding who will perform what errands inside the family. All the more as of late, men have been tolerating bigger obligations inside the family â€Å"either through decision, or need in their job as a solitary parent in the paid workforce†. The holes among men and women’s duties in the house are diminishing, yet there is significantly more to be done about this issue. Kid care is the biggest concern guardians have with regards to their family and their work. There are numerous choices accessible for guardians with regards to childcare, for example, childcare, caretakers, family members, sitters, and schools, in spite of the fact that it isn't unreasonably simple. A few families can't bear the cost of childcare or caretakers; some don't have families they can depend on for childcare and some parents’ work plans don't suit babysitter’s hours. The age ofâ the youngster is another factor that must be viewed as when anticipating childcare. On the off chance that the kid is a newborn child, one of the guardians normally must be with the

The Interesting Id A Freudian Analysis of the Mother Complex in Lawrence’s Works - Literature Essay Samples

A mother is arguably the most important figure in a child’s life, especially during his or her developmental stages. However, too much love, especially while a child is learning to bond, has the potential to create a mother complex and permanently damage a child’s psyche. This concept, popularized by Sigmund Freud at the turn of the twentieth century, is explored in numerous literary works, especially those of D.H. Lawrence. Through Sons and Lovers, â€Å"The Horse Dealer’s Daughter,† and â€Å"Rocking Horse Winner,† Lawrence demonstrates how a mother complex, specifically one formed during a time of childhood trauma, results in a magnified Id. The first example of this concept is Paul Morel in Sons and Lovers. His extremely close bond with Gertrude is borne of the traumatic events that transpire during his developmental years. His brother dies, and soon after he becomes deathly sick as well. During this time, both Paul’s mental and physical health are under duress, and the person who constantly tends to him is Gertrude. She is with him through his grave illness, creating a much more intricate bond than that of a normal mother-son relationship. The two are described as being â€Å"knitted together in perfect intimacy,† explicitly describing the nature of their connection (Sons 97). This deprives him of his ability later in life to bond intimately with other women, especially on a romantic level, because he is never able to fully form the layers of his personality. Like his love for Gertrude, Paul Morel’s Id, which is still forming at the time of his traumatic experience, becomes overly expressed. Accord ing to Freud, the Id â€Å"has no knowledge of objective reality†¦ [and] attempts at immediate satisfaction† (Mitchell). Paul’s amplified Id manifests itself in both of the romantic relationships he holds throughout the novel; he seeks immediate sexual satisfaction through Clara and immediate spiritual satisfaction through Miriam. These relationships illustrate the extent of his inability to understand his mother complex and his own life’s reality, an obvious example of his over-expressed Id. D.H. Lawrence also demonstrates this idea through Mabel Pervin in â€Å"The Horse Dealer’s Daughter.† Mabel’s fond memories of her childhood all revolve around her mother; Mabel’s developing years were years spent with her mother, living prosperously and surrounded by love. However, with her mother’s death came the amplification of her mother complex. Her extreme opposition to her father’s decisions coupled with the immense emotional trauma of her mother’s passing leaves her forever infatuated with the memory of her mother’s love. She has a sort of jealousy for her mother, who was able to escape the world that soon condemned Mabel to ten years of servitude. She strives to be a likeness of her mother: â€Å"Mindless and persistent, she seemed in a sort of ecstasy to be coming nearer to her fulfilment, her own glorification, approaching her dead mother, who was glorified† (Horse). This clearly defines Mabel’s exagger ated Id, a result of the complex formed by her mother’s traumatic death. The Id is â€Å"not governed by logic† (Mitchell), shown explicitly by her mindless attempt to become her mother. She is stuck in the childlike mindset of idolizing her mother, a mindset governed solely by her Id. Paul in â€Å"Rocking Horse Winner† is yet another example of a mishandled childhood situation resulting in over-attachment to a mother. The story begins with an explanation of the tireless whispers that course through the house during Paul’s childhood: â€Å"the unspoken phrase, There must be more money! There must be more money!†(Rocking). This constant reminder of the money issues that Paul’s family faces is accompanied by his knowledge that his mother does not love him, as explicitly stated in the opening paragraph. These perpetual expressions of the familial issues that Paul faces is traumatic for him, as he is young and extremely impressionable. He is just at the time that his id is fully developing, but throughout this period he is reminded of his mother’s problematic situation. His father is not helping ease the tension, so young Paul must take the burden. He decides that it is his duty to be â€Å"lucky† and bring home money for his mother (Rocking). However, this obsession with fulfilling his mother’s needs is not fueled by rational thinking but instead by his overbearing Id. At the time when his Id should start being modified by a developing ego, he forms a strong mother complex that stunts this growth, leaving him with an obsession to ride his horse until he wins. Only then will he fulfill his irrational, Id-driven desire to make money for his mother. He cannot regulate himself because his Id is too powerful. Each of these characters cannot understand the root of their irrational needs, yet they know that they must channel it into some sort of release. Their need for catharsis crosses the literary borders between plotlines, uniting all three Lawrence characters. They yearn to â€Å"discharge their pent-up energy and cease to be a source of disturbance† (Mitchell), resulting in not only a release of their Id-powered fantasies but much, much more. Paul Morel, driven to insanity and isolation by his mother complex, exercises his final catharsis by killing Gertrude, attempting to free himself of the bondage that has held him his entire life. Mabel Pervin, stuck wandering in a life of confinement and unhappiness without her mother, attempts to purge herself by committing suicide, an extreme form of catharsis that expresses the extent of her underdeveloped psyche. Finally, young Paul, trapped in a cycle of making money and seeing it spent by his mother, never quieting the whispers in the house, exercises the ultimate catharsis: true death. His final win on the rocking horse results in the largest sum of money yet and his mother finds out; this causes Paul to feel fulfilled, satisfying his Id and allowing him the sweet release of death, cleansing him of the problems he harbored due to his damaged mindset. By crafting these parallel stories, D.H. Lawrence successfully conveys the idea that a traumatic childhood experience coupled with a mother complex leads to an overly expressive Id and, inevitably, the need for an extreme form of catharsis even as extreme as death.

It is just a matter of having some faith in the fact that as long as you are able to draw breath in the universe, you have a chance. When I attack a role, be it TV, film or stage,  the first thing I say is, I dont want to know anything.  If its good I dont want to hear it;  if its bad I dont want to hear it .  The only thing either thing can do is distract me.  I like to stay focused.I think when you begin to think of yourself as having achieved something, then theres nothing left for you to work towards. But I would never  discourage   anybody  either, because no one could discourage me.I dont condemn anyone for making their choices. If someone chooses those roles, fine. But not for me.  When someone stops me and says, Youre the reason I became an actress,  that lets me know I made the right decision. When I told my mother that I wanted to be an actress, she said, you cant live here and do that, and so I moved out. The Apology by Socrates - 1099 Words

Apology, in Socrates day, stood for defense rather than seeking forgiveness, as it is now commonly used. To Socrates, it did not matter to him whether or not he was persecuted, as long as he did what was correct. Socrates whole philosophy is that to know knowledge is to have wisdom, and to have wisdom is to know oneself. The people of Athens did not like Socrates due to both the early accusers and late accusers; however, Socrates provides an argument to put these fallacies to rest. Plato’s Apology is the story of Socrates defending himself against the charges placed upon him of corrupting the youth, not believing in the gods, and by making the lesser argument the stronger. Socrates argues that he became a Philosopher so that he could find what he was looking for, which is the search for human excellence. To Socrates, questioning is not skepticism, and he searches for the truth by asking questions to those who are known to have knowledge in society in hopes of finding true wisd om. While questioning those who proclaim to have knowledge, Socrates finds that these people are lacking, which provokes the townspeople to find Socrates a threat. Socrates Apology is about lying to rest the accusations of both the earlier and later accusers, while proving that all he was searching for is human excellence and truth, which he does not have, but in Socrates view is the main purpose and greatest achievement of life. In the Apology, Socrates begins his argument saying that he was broughtShow MoreRelatedApology On Apology Of Socrates852 Words   |  4 PagesMarch 2, 2017 Apology of Socrates Socrates was a Greek philosopher and the founder of western philosophy. Literature Review of Graphic Organizers Essay - 715 Words

Literature Review Numerous studies confirm the benefits of using graphic organizers in the classroom in terms of helping students develop and process information. The mere fact this is a method that has been backed by such a strong body of evidence has imbued me with confidence that this intervention will yield positive results. Graphic organizers are a way to help students grapple with core ideas of the content and develop sophisticated relational understandings of it (Ellis 2004). They help students to process information as opposed to memorizing and stressing facts (Ellis 2004), which is what history, is predominantly concerned with. Too often when we teach children in our particular content areas we take a Scholar Academic†¦show more content†¦In addition the act of showing students the particular information has the effect of allowing them to create their own understanding of the text. It allows students to examine the process of discerning important information from that which is imma terial. Since understandings cannot be transmitted, merely telling children the relationships in some topic seems unlikely to provide much of a press for understanding. Nevertheless explaining can work whenÂ…a conceptual model such as an analogy or an example can highlight what is important and make connections easier to notice (Newton 2001). Ausbel (1963) originally rationalized the use of graphic organizers by speculating that a learners existing knowledge which he referred to a s cognitive structure, greatly influence his or her learning. When the cognitive structure expands and strengthens by incorporating new information, learning occurs. To facilitate this process, graphic organizers provide learners with a framework for relating their existing knowledge to the new information. (Kim et. Al 2004). The evidence that supports my research question provides some basis as well as stability for my conclusions. Catholicism and Oppression of Women Essay - 1441 Words

Religion is powerful in that it controls followers’ behaviours and beliefs throughout their entire lives; it is a form of social control. Catholicism is one of the most widely known religions influencing more than 2 billion people around the world (Ross). Within Catholicism not everyone are seen as equals; men have greater privilege than women. The bible and church are from a male’s point of view (Christ 86) and passages within the bible are used to enforce a sexual hierarchy. In fact, the oppression of women begins with the first story in Genesis about creation, which portrays females as being inferior to men and even of an evil nature. This one passage is the main source of justification of oppression of woman in the church (Daly 13).†¦show more content†¦God did not breathe life into her but took her from man. This is where the justification of oppression of woman begins. Due to woman not having the breath of God blown into her, she is not as holy as men, no t deserving of God’s breath but rather only deserving of man’s rib and flesh. God is a man who created man, he could not create woman in the image of him because he is a man, so he took Adam’s rib. Adam also had the power of naming all animals in the kingdom, including woman; since she could not name herself, the underlying message from this example is that women do not have the privilege to be knowledgeable and make decisions. In the story of creation, Eve causes sin and is the scapegoat for Adam’s actions and thus God then establishing punishments for humans. Woman have more devastating punishments than men: God said to woman â€Å"I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you† (Genesis 3:16). To man God said that he shall have to grow his food, there is no desire for his wife, physical trauma when making children or for his wife to rule over him. Women also have to grow food to live, but they have the extra punishment of birth and being inferior to their husbands. These messages are quite clear, and what the men who are writing these passages are trying to convey. New generation jails â€Å"seek to manage human behavior positively, consistently and fairly.† (Sullivan, 2007, â€Å"Major changes†) Goals include maximizing the interaction between the staff and prisoners, subjecting the latter to more direct and continuous supervision, and enhancing safety for both parties, by making the jail more manageable and organized. The design is based on a philosophy that accused or convicted offenders must be treated in a humane manner while being incarcerated. We will write a custom essay sample on New Generation of Jails or any similar topic only for you Order Now (Allen et. al, 2007, p. 101) New generation jails are constructed using a podular design, where housing areas are divided into smaller and more manageable pods or units. A typical unit contains single occupancy cells to avoid triggering aggressiveness among inmates that may occur when they share a cell. Each unit has a secure control booth where the staff can directly and constantly observe and supervise inmate activity. (Nelson, 1998, â€Å"New Generation Jails†) The houses are designed to imitate a â€Å"normalized environment,† where inmates can enjoy visiting, programming, recreation, and related activities. Carpeting, wood, upholstered furnishings, paint color, and considerable natural light are incorporated into the housing unit to encourage better moods and interaction. Educational facilities, telephones, exercise machines and other recreational equipment are also available. Unlike the traditional prison cell which contained only a bunk, faucet and toilet, cells now have a desk and seat, running water, intercoms, and large windows. (Law Library, 2007, â€Å"Jail structure and design characteristics†) So far, assessment of new generation jails have shown that they help alleviate problems of tension and violence, noise inside the prison, idleness, vandalism, discipline and jail costs. Staff morale, inmate control, and communication/relaying of information have also greatly improved. A Critical Analysis of The Hero free essay sample

A Critical Analysis of The Hero, with References to Beowulf. After critical analysis and in-depth reflection, I have adopted the belief that heroes, despite their extraneous characteristics, have very similar values to the people that follow them. This point of view can best be explained using three key points of focus. These points are as follows: The similarity of a higher guidance In times of need, the similarity of the code of honor that they live by, and the fact that no matter who the hero Is, he or she Is under pressure to be a successful role model. The similarity of higher guidance In times of need Is the easiest and most direct of all the three factors. Most heroes, but not all, live their lives In allegiance to God or another worshiped figure. Take the story of Beowulf for example. Beowulf was without fear when he faced the monster known as Greened. We will write a custom essay sample on A Critical Analysis of The Hero or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This Is due to the fact that Beowulf lived a life of faith. Faith in God assured him that win or lose, he was fighting for everything that represented good. He was ready to die, and would be honored to do so, especially in such a dramatic battle of good against evil. Beowulf oath reached so high that when fighting Greened; he had not a shred of fear. He was positive that he was doing Gods bidding, and for this was the lifestyle a hero should strive to achieve. The people that followed him and believed him are no different. People have relied on faith throughout time. There are many people that live lives of purity and worship. There are also many people that believe that God has decided their fate already, and they are mere servants living out a script of divine creation.Although slight differences are present, faith is equally important in the lives of those ho embrace it, whether they are a hero or a lowly servant. I believe the correct view on the subject is that no matter who you are, you are still Gods love and servant. This unites every class, as long as they chose to believe it. Another communal characteristic of heroes and those who follow them Is the fact that everyone lives by a code of honor. Heroes live by a higher code of honor than those who follow them. For heroes, their actions must either all be in accordance with the rules set by their master, or greatly excel the expectations that are held for others. Going out of their way at every possible Instance Is considered mandatory. The main point of all of this Is not that they actually do all these things, but that they proudly enjoy performing the tasks given to them. Everyday people are the same, Just less Intense. Everyone has a code of honor. Some have a higher level than others. One person may live by a code of honor consisting of no regulations at all.Another could live by the regulations that they cant go against the bible, cant break the law, and occasionally have to try to be nice to people. In another case, a person could see the minimum code of conduct in their life being to live their life in the footsteps of God, obey all laws, and do every possible act of humanity and good will that they can. The point is that no matter who the subject is, be it hero or zero, everyone has a code of conduct that they chose to live by or disregard. The choice is for the person to Heroes are under great pressure to always do the right thing.Sometimes doing the right thing is the hardest thing to do. Perhaps being a hero is not so great after all. Trying to live a faithful and honorable life, it can be hard to please everyone. Being a hero means having people know and react to the actions produced by that hero. Therefore, being a hero is synonymous with being a role model. There is no question as to whether or not the hero will strive to the right thing. But it is possible that others may interpret the heros actions incorrectly and doubt the heros faith and Judgment.I can see where it could be hard for a hero to accomplish his goals when they are for the benefit of people that dont care for him. A good hero will overcome this hurdle and realize that his intentions will be condoned and supported in retrospect. People are the same. It doesnt matter who you are, because everyone looks up to someone and is influenced by his or her actions. It is hard to do the right thing when you have to second-guess every decision in order to please people.A true hero does what he/she believes is right, and worries what others think only when they have realized that the hero was right all along. In conclusion, despite their extraneous characteristics, heroes have very similar values to the people that follow them due to the facts that: The similarity of a higher guidance in times of need, the similarity of the code of honor that they live by, and the fact that no matter who the hero is, he or she is under pressure to be a successful role model.

Far from Heaven Essay Essays

Far from Heaven Essay Essays Far from Heaven Essay Paper Far from Heaven Essay Paper Far From Heaven Far from Heaven is a film about a 1950s period. It deals with some issues such as race, sexuality and class. There is Cathy, the perfect mother and wife married to Frank, the successful and charming man, who works as seals manager in a big company, having the perfect life. Until Cathy, finds that her husband; Frank is a homosexual. She cannot divorce from her husband because she does not want to destruct her marriage. At the same time, she meets with Raymond, and she goes to him for comfort. They spend good time together, but their relationship causes some bad consequences for him and his daughter. On the other side, Frank cannot suppress his desires of homosexuality. When he and his wife went to a holiday, he falls in love with another man. Their life becomes depressing, and at the end, they divorce and the film ends with sadness. Far From Heaven shows that racism and homosexuality were serious problems the society faced back in the 1950s; however, nowadays the problem is not as serious and intense but it is still prevalent in some societies. First, According to Britannica online, racism â€Å"is the belief in the inherent superiority of one race over others†. Many people believe that it depends on if a person was brought into the world as a racist or not, but that is not the case at all. In fact, an individual cannot be born a racist but only learn to become one as they grow from child to adulthood. For instance, in the movie, the two boys Chased Raymond’s daughter and hit her with a rock in her head because of her color and the boys were affected by their parents thoughts. Also, in the 1950s, people used to treat the African American without respect; like when Raymond grabbed Cathy’s hand, a man yelled at him saying â€Å"hey boy† and this is disrespecting way to call a person with. : Likewise, racism leads to many side effects, like intricacy in finding jobs for the colored people. For example, in the film, all the American Africans used to work as gardeners, servants or waiters and they were totally ignored by the society, without having chance to achieve a better job. Generally, homosexual people was known as a problem; psychologists and psychiatrists had mainly studied homosexuals who were either in prison, or in therapy. As an example, when Cathy knew that her husband was a homosexual, she told him to see a doctor to solve this problem. Evelyn Hooker (1907-1996) was the first person who compared between groups of non-clinical homosexuals with a comparable group of heterosexuals: Her first report was called The Adjustment of the Male Overt Homosexual. It showed that homosexuals were not inherently abnormal and that there was no difference between  homosexual and heterosexual men in terms of pathology. Besides, in the past, homosexuals were afraid to show their homosexuality, and they were doing that underground: Frank used to go to a gay club in secret and his wife didn’t try to tell anyone about that because it was a source of embarrassment. Yet, homosexuals didn’t have any rights, like the right to work, can be limited somewhat for reasons of external misconduct, without incurring in unjust discrimination Second, racism nowadays has been weakened. Compared to the past, racism has come a long way toward disappearing. For example, Oprah Winfrey has one of the most popular shows and in the past black people weren’t allowed to work in the media. Besides, the president of the USA is black, and it’s a major shift considering to the past because they were restricted to certain jobs only. However, racism is still active in some cities and countries. Sometimes, Racism is thrown at us in so many ways that some people are subconsciously or unwillingly enveloped in its wake. For example, racist jokes are becoming increasingly familiar among teens in our society: there are many people I know who have poked fun at blacks, Asians and Hispanics for no reason but to be funny and respected by their peers. In addition, in the past 50 years, many leaders showed when the black people were actually in need to follow someone and obtain their civil rights and end the racism. Two of the most powerful and influential leaders of the twentieth century had to be Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. These two leaders had different approaches, and different views towards white people, perhaps their different approaches of violence and non-violence stem from their original opinions of how capable the whites are of being good, but fought for the same goal, and without them we wouldn’t be able to reach this level of freedom; like when Malcolm X said in his speech, â€Å"You cant separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom. On the other hand, homosexuals in our time have many rights compared to what they faced in the 50s. In November 2003, the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled that the state cannot deny marriage licenses to homosexual couples. Following the Massachusetts decision, more gay marriages occurred publicly across the nation from San Francisco to New York. President George W. Bush responded to these activities by urging Congress to pass a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages. On May 17, 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to grant legalized same-sex marriages. After Evelyn Hooker’s research, comparing matched groups of homosexually- and heterosexually-identified men. She found that scores from psychological tests of the two groups were indistinguishable from one. Furthermore, there is huge percentage of the people against homosexuals because it’s a wrong act and against contrary the religions. Finally, I think Racism is still alive, and will always be alive. Historically, South Carolina promoted the harshest treatment of slaves in the 1700s, as they prospered from their rice plantations. Slaves’ body parts were amputated if they ran away. South Carolinas torture of slaves was adopted by the other colonies to put fear into their slaves. Even today, a racial flag flies high in that state as a constant reminder to the African Americans of their past, and their past oppressors. Likewise, It should be remembered that Abraham Lincoln wrote a letter to Horace Greeley saying, Dear Sir: I have not meant to leave any one in doubt My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or destroy Slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it (Uprooting Racism, Paul Kivel, pp122). Scientifically, sex is a means to an end; the end being the propagation of the human race. This end can never be fulfilled by sex between males or females. Therefore, homosexuality is irrational and illogical. The Origins of the Rose-Colored Glasses Idiom

The Origins of the Rose-Colored Glasses Idiom We all know that seeing something through rose-colored glasses means you see it as better than it really is, but did you ever wonder where this idiom originated? Finding the Origin The origin of this idiom is difficult to find. Apparently, nobody who writes about rose-colored glasses has bothered to actually look through them. Once you do, the origin is obvious. One of the best descriptions is over on Wise Geek, where they go through several, optimism-focused theories ranging from the symbolism of roses and rose gardens to the Victorians to map-makers glasses to gazing through the bottom of a wine glass. There are also references to the book  Tom Brown at Oxford  by Thomas Hughes and written in 1861, but its unclear if this is the first use of the term. Rose Colored Glasses and Chickens A more curious suggestion is that the term comes from the use of goggles on chickens to keep them from pecking feathers off each other. An article about chicken eyeglasses at Ask.com states that rose-colored lenses as the coloring is thought to prevent a chicken wearing them from recognizing blood on other chickens, which may increase the tendency for abnormal injurious behavior. They were mass-produced and sold throughout the United States as early as the beginning of the 20th century. This seems like an odd association of the term since rose-colored glasses accentuate reds unless chickens see red differently than humans. Regardless, it may be contrary to our usage of the idiom. No matter what the origin of the idiom is, seeing the world through rose-colored glasses really does make the world a better place. The reds are  incredibly  red, the greens lush, the blues truly electric. Willy Wonka, eat your heart out.
